As a community we teach our children that they can become anything they want to be as long as they put forth the hard work and determination to accomplish their goals.  However, it is foolish to fail to recognize implicit basis that comes through how organizations present and brand themselves.  Currently, Goffstown's executive branch is named the Board of Selectmen. The branding we are presenting is that we select, meaning we carefully chose the best suitable, men to serve our town.  At the time that the Board of Selectmen were created, women did not have the right to vote or run for public office.  However, its now 2018 and there is no reason for this.  40+ towns in NH have already changed their name from Board of Selectmen to Select Board.   According to our town administrator, the costs of doing so are nominal and include getting new letterhead and changing a few signs.  However, despite this in a 3-2 vote, the Board of Selectmen voted to keep its name because of (1) tradition; (2) board members can designate their title as Select Woman; and (3) they don't agree with change for the sake of change.
