GM to make budget performance EVs, first based on the Pontiac Rageous
The Issue
In 2009, GM killed Pontiac due to a government mandate leftover from the US bailout of GM. However, to this day, Pontiac was well regarded as GM's budget performance division. Now GM is beginning to see pressure that its current crop of cars have become boring, the current performance cars are out of reach for many, and its EV sales are slipping due to lack of adoption. Therefore this petition requests GM to consider taking the 1997 Pontiac Rageous concept car, and to convert it into an EV platform to be sold through the Buick-GMC dealer network.
In order for there to be mass adoption by consumers of electric vehicles, there needs to be more budget prices soul-stirring EVs. GM used to be the leader in budget performance: from Cyclones to Fiero GTs, to Cobalt SSs, to G8 GTs, GM used to remember that not all aficionados can afford CTS-Vs or ZR1s. EVs need baseline passionate followers.
The 1997 Rageous concept as a EV makes sense: It looks incredible to this day, a modern performance car. It has 4 suicide-style doors, which makes for a more convenient vehicle - essential today. Furthering its utility, its hatchback style and fold-down seats also makes for a smart set up, good for younger buyers who need utility. And as an EV, it could be set up to be a 'hot hatch' like an EV6. Lastly, it could be sold in the Buick-GMC dealer network and possibly in the Chevy network as a Chevy Jolt!
