One Year in Nepal: A Sanctuary for Dhutaṅga Yogi Thích Minh Tuệ

One Year in Nepal: A Sanctuary for Dhutaṅga Yogi Thích Minh Tuệ
On 25 September 2026, Dhutaṅga Yogi Thích Minh Tuệ completed one full year in Nepal. Nepal has become the longest sanctuary of his international journey—a place where he and the companions with Thích Minh Tuệ have been able to continue their austere Buddhist practice in relative peace.
Special Thanks to The Nepal Weekly and NepYork
Our heartfelt gratitude goes to The Nepal Weekly and NepYork for marking this one-year milestone and bringing attention—to the people of Nepal and to the wider world—to something remarkable taking place at the birthplace of the Buddha.

The Pilgrim Lumbini Forgot to Count

These articles raise an important question: How do conventional tourism statistics measure a spiritual presence that brings people repeatedly to Nepal to offer alms, pay respect, walk, meditate, and simply witness an ancient Buddhist practice being lived today?
One Year in Nepal — The Numbers
A statistical record published on 28 September 2026, three days after the anniversary, provides a snapshot:
1 year + 3 days in Nepal, following arrival on 25 September 2025.
Nepal is the longest stay in any country during the international journey.
655 days since the group left Vietnam, using 12 December 2024 as the source's starting point.
8 countries traversed: Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, India, and Nepal.
Approximately 10 months at or behind Chùa Cam.
46 practitioners: 39 men and 7 women, according to the September 28 record.
12 YouTube channels accompanying or documenting the group, according to the same source.
161 consecutive days without Minh Tuệ going on an alms round, with the last recorded alms collection listed as 20 April 2026.

Beyond Nepal, our documentary research reconstructs approximately 8.5–11.1 billion platform-counted views surrounding Minh Tuệ from April 2024 through July 2026 using two independent methods, with approximately 90 million modeled views in July 2026 alone and 181 identified YouTube channels.
These figures measure the scale of the media phenomenon surrounding Minh Tuệ and should not be interpreted as unique individual viewers.
Special Thanks to Narendra Manandhar
A particularly heartfelt thank-you goes to Narendra Manandhar, the Nepali Buddhist scholar-journalist associated with Lumbini Buddhist University, whose sustained field documentation has helped create an important Nepalese eyewitness record of Minh Tuệ and his companions.
His documentation extends from January 2026 through the one-year anniversary. An earlier inventory identified 10 dated Facebook field posts from 27 January through 18 August. His anniversary post, accompanied by 36 photographs and explicitly marking one year of their stay in Nepal, brings the documented series to at least 11 Facebook posts.
His observations have also reached beyond Facebook and into Nepalese media. From Lumbini to the Kathmandu Valley, his photographs and field notes provide something particularly valuable: a sustained Nepalese eyewitness record of the practice itself.
His documentation also contributed to identifying the Vietnamese dhutaṅga practitioners appearing in a National Geographic photograph that had initially described them differently.
🙏 Thank you, Narendra, for documenting this extraordinary year from Nepal itself.
Special Thanks to YouTube Channel Thích Chịu Khó
Special recognition also goes to the YouTube channel Thích Chịu Khó, which has been following and documenting Dhutaṅga Yogi Thích Minh Tuệ and the group in Nepal since November 2025.
While Narendra Manandhar has provided an important Nepalese eyewitness record through photographs, field observations, and reporting, Thích Chịu Khó has contributed sustained audiovisual documentation, allowing audiences in Vietnam and around the world to follow the daily practice and circumstances of Minh Tuệ and the companions with Thích Minh Tuệ over many months.
Together, these independent records help preserve a remarkable period of living Buddhist practice in Nepal—not merely as retrospective history, but as it has unfolded day by day.
🙏 Our gratitude to Thích Chịu Khó for continuing to document the group since November 2025.
Special Thanks to Nguyễn Ngọc Như Quỳnh
Our gratitude also goes to writer Nguyễn Ngọc Như Quỳnh for carrying the Nepal story to a much wider Vietnamese readership.
On 26 September 2026, one day after the anniversary, she published a commentary in Tiếng Dân responding to The Nepal Weekly article:
“Một năm ở đất Phật: Thầy Minh Tuệ tạo sức hút mà du lịch Nepal chưa đo đếm được.”
Her commentary begins with the milestone itself—25 September 2026 marked exactly one year of Minh Tuệ's presence in Nepal—and develops the significance of The Nepal Weekly's reporting for Vietnamese readers.
Importantly, her commentary was subsequently reproduced or circulated by other Vietnamese-language and diaspora publications, carrying the anniversary story to additional audiences:

The progression is noteworthy:
Nepalese eyewitness documentation → Nepalese media → Nguyễn Ngọc Như Quỳnh’s Vietnamese commentary → Vietnamese and diaspora republications → Nepali-American media.
Thank You, Nepal
For one full year, Nepal has offered Minh Tuệ and his companions something more important than publicity: sanctuary—a place where their peaceful spiritual practice has been able to continue.
Lumbini is known throughout the world as the birthplace of the Buddha. The presence of Minh Tuệ and his companions adds another dimension: Lumbini not only preserves Buddhist history; it can also provide sanctuary for living Buddhist practice.
Our deepest gratitude goes to the people of Nepal; The Nepal Weekly and NepYork for marking this anniversary; Narendra Manandhar for his sustained Nepalese eyewitness documentation; Thích Chịu Khó for months of audiovisual documentation; Nguyễn Ngọc Như Quỳnh for carrying the story into Vietnamese media; and all the journalists, photographers, writers, pilgrims, and ordinary people who have helped document this remarkable year.
🙏 Thank you, Nepal, for providing sanctuary.
Đặc Biệt Cảm Ơn The Nepal Weekly và NepYork

The Pilgrim Lumbini Forgot to Count
https://nepyork.com/2026/09/29/the-pilgrim-lumbini-forgot-to-count/
