The Glenbourne Mental Health Unit in the South-West United Kingdom, is purpose built to treat the growing needs of the mentally ill. This is done by determining the best cause of treatment bases on the needs and experiences of the patient, such as occupational therapy, ECT and various medications. This requires the patient and their consultant to have a trusting understanding of what will make a patient better, both short and long term. The patient in question is a 25 year old male previously diagnosed with mild asthma, reflux, an upper airway narrowing (still being investigated) and - as a child - anxiety and autism. Despite their efforts to reinvestigate the aging, outdated diagnosis of a mental condition, such pleas were ignored. The patient struggles with day to day activities due to their respiratory condition and has conducted a number of "trial and error" investigations over the years to reach his current physical diagnosis.' Because of the overlap with 'anxiety' symptoms, this has been highly difficult to achieve, however recent evidence has surfaced pointing to causes of symptoms. In this regard the patient considers his breathing a nuisance, but is otherwise satisfied that he can be treated with time. Under the false pretense of a mental health issue preventing the patient from doing day to day activities "of their own choice" (entirely false) the patient was detained under Section 2, and later 3, of the Mental Health Act, UK, at the Glenbourne Mental Unit of Derriford Hospital. Frequently the patient has described how traumatising their experience within the unit has been, and how their mental state has genuinly deterriorated due to being admitted. Although they offered to become an informal patient long beforehand, this request was ignored on various occassions. Nevertheless they have complied with many treatments and activities in an effort to prove their healthy state of mind, as long as their physical health allows for it. Medications with sedative effects make the patient considerably worse both mentally and physically, by affecting the liklihood of asthma flare ups and by further narrowing the prexisiting upper airway obstruction. Both conditions have been sufficiently proven in their existence via X-Rays, medication trials and recordings of nocturnal symptoms, and all symptoms explained as the cause of natural anxiety, but not primarily caused by it. Sadly, despite the patient's compliance with attempting their 8th psychiatric medication in 4 years of treatment - which once again has worsened their health within days of the sedative effect beginning to take effect - their consultant has ignored their basic needs and continues to prescribe more and more medication, while insisting their genuine physical concerns are byproducts of "Fear" and delusions. They have diagnosed the patient with Somantic Disorder, ignoring critical evidence entirely, and instead opting for an old, highly controversial 'wastebasket' diagnosis. A sub-set of Hypochondria for medically unexplained (untrue) symptoms, sometimes known as the Witchcraft diagnosis. The patient is rapidly, mentally deteriorating from this simple lack of belief in their mental wellbeing and many broken promises in being heard out. They have requested this petition to assist in receiving proper treatment that does not cause further horrendous discomfort. They do this due to poor mental advocacy support, poor communication between consultants and nurses and because they feel increasingly unsafe about their detention due to the building effects of the medications, and several uncontrolled violent attacks from other patients around the wards. The purpose of this petition is to provide an arguement within an upcoming Triburnal appeal - appeals are extraordinarily unsuccessful in the Glenbourne Unit without mass intervention.
