Get Glastonbury an AstroTurf / Multi-Sports Community ground facility.

The Issue

In Glastonbury there really is nothing for the children or young people to do, they have been the victims of zero investment for decades. We need a community sports facility for the health and well being of children, adults, parents, grandparents and elders alike. The children and young people here adore football and they adore sports and the only facilities for them are in Street where their facilities are severely over-subscribed due to high demand. Many people are unable to do sports because of this. People are forced to entertain themselves with devices, consoles and screens we are deplorably allowing this by failing to provide facilities to get people away from these fun but over-used gadgets.

In Belgium and the Netherlands they know exactly what such services do for a whole community. We need a similar model where fantastic facilities are respected, maintained and run largely by community volunteers. It could provide a cafe, grounds, educational opportunities where instead of sitting at home in splendid isolation and loneliness retirees and adults with free-time and inclination could volunteer and help to support. The community would become invigorated, engaged and our children and young people would thrive in real opportunities for physical health and personal development. Sport is not only about winning but it is also about learning how to lose and rise again, to be resilient and ready to go again...

I have raised my own son in Somerset and he has gone on to play at Street FC, he was supported by selfless individuals at Wessex Youth and at Street FC. I have watched pitches booked up to capacity turn away groups of young people who cannot find the space to play together. Our young people need action, investment and community support too long they have gone without , please support this petition and give the young people of the future the chance to play football, basketball, hockey, etc to have fun, to get fit and to develop as strong cogs in an engaged community.
