Art School started this petition to Glasgow School of Art (Student's Association)

To the people of Glasgow, all students of The Art School past and present, customers, guests and anyone who supports workers rights,

We are the Front of House staff at the Glasgow School of Art Students’ Association (GSASA), commonly known as ‘The Art School’ which is the students’ union for the Glasgow School of Art (GSA). On the 2nd of August we were informed that hours for all Front of House staff were to be cut to essentially zero with immediate effect until September.

At an unpaid staff meeting on the 5th it was implied by new management that we are responsible for the long standing failings and mismanagement of the business - which we know to be the fault of senior management at GSASA and lack of maintenance on the part of GSA. This temporary reduction in working hours has had a huge financial and emotional impact on us all, forced us into precarity, and has left some of us at risk of temporary homelessness. Furthermore, changes have been made to our working conditions including non-contractual reductions in pay, break, food and holiday entitlements, coinciding with an increase in job responsibilities and a lack of operational transparency. While shift patterns are returning to normal as term begins, we are campaigning for GSA and GSASA to take responsibility for these events and to ensure contractual job security, a fairer workplace now and that this does not happen again.

We want the The Art School to thrive as a sustainable business and we know that we can help to achieve this through the recognition of our collective experience and our emotional investment in the venue. The Art School has always been a workplace of mutual respect and trust; we are proud of our community, our low staff turnover and the venue as a space that strives to promote, support and serve our students and customers, as well as underrepresented groups and identities. Glasgow deserves this space, and we deserve a workplace that ensures basic job security.

We are aware of the financial difficulties that The Art School is facing, but it is unacceptable that the people on the lowest wages, working anti-social hours as the public face of the venue are the hardest hit. We will not be blamed for the financial and operational mismanagement resulting in the exploitation of our zero-hour contracts, a practice that is morally and ethically corrupt. The direction in which the business is heading under our new management is concerning on both an operational and cultural level. We want The Art School to continue being the significant cultural space that it is, one that is built on trust and respect for its workers and its community. For this reason we refuse to be ignored at this time of restructuring.

We have presented a collective grievance to GSASA and GSA, demanding basic work conditions such as Real Living Wage and guaranteed minimum hour contracts. GSA have thus far refused to engage with us and claim no connection to or responsibility for their students’ union while financing senior management roles and making key decisions about the estate that directly affect GSASA.

We hope anyone who reads this wants to support our demands and is willing to share this message to put pressure on the Glasgow School of Art Students’ Association and the Glasgow School of Art to meet the requests of our grievance.
