NSW needs a sports focussed, mid size indoor stadium. In the debate around tearing down and rebuilding two football stadiums, one of which is only 20 years old, the needs of sports - like netball - that require indoor stadiums have been overlooked. Netball fans deserve better.
Netball is booming in NSW but the two professional teams, the NSW Swifts and the GWS Giants don't have a stadium that is both big enough to fit all of their fans, nor sports focussed enough to accommodate all of their home games. Netball now has to turn away spectators because they can't fit them into the Quay Centre, or risk alienating fans by moving games around to a number of different venues. This year home games have been played at Quay Centre, Qudos Bank Arena, The ICC in Darling harbour and the AIS Arena in Canberra.
We respectfully request that NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Sports Minister Stuart Ayres consider the needs of the largest women's sport in the state. Needs that for too long have been pushed into the background to cater for the football codes.
A fast and cost effectively fix is available by using money from the Sydney Olympic Park Authority's sale of land at Olympic Park to refurbish the 10 000 seat tennis centre at Olympic Park, which gets used for 3-4 weeks a year in summer. For a fraction of the cost of building new stadiums, a roof could be added and some cosmetic changes made which would fill a gaping hole in Sydney's stadium offering. This money is available right now, and construction could start almost immediately if the green light was given by government.
