Friends for a Quiet! Glacier Coalition
7 May 2017
Thank you for supporting Quiet! Glacier! People from 56 countries and every state are continuing to sign this petition- to help Glacier National Park take back the quiet – to address the adverse impact commercial overflights have on Glacier’s visitors and wildlife in this precious jewel on the Crown of the Continent. Glacier is a special case because it is a de facto Wilderness International Park, on record for a quiet management plan since 1999. They even started an air tour management plan in 2003 to phase out commercial overflights completely. Public opinion matters in public places. That is why your participation and comments in this petition are so important. THANK YOU! TO THE THIRTY amazing organizations have joined the Coalition (see list below) – they can use our support too as they continue to do the good work for all of us. What more can we do? Keep mentioning it to family, friends and co-workers, spread the word, invite people to view the website and learn more, promote the petition. Share the most recent reports of noise and what it is doing to us! There is a lot of recent noise about quiet - in the last week all these publications ran a story on Noise Pollution in National Parks, audio and videos to check out: Science, [by Rachel T. Buxton, Megan F. McKenna, Daniel Mennitt, Kurt Fristrup, Kevin Crooks, Lisa Angeloni, and George Wittemyer] also published in Phys.org, the Missoulian, the Guardian and BackPacker (specifically about Glacier National Park). NPR audio -America's Protected Natural Areas Are Polluted, By Noise. Last fall an excellent video about the importance of having quiet places for living things, appeared in InsideScience. There is also a wonderful video titled In Pursuit of Silence. All these reports have in common that silence is a sound that we need to protect and preserve.
