Today is a landmark victory for women in the history of the Indian Army. What started as a fight by the WO’s (Women officers) back in 2003, has finally come to fruition! And what we started not even three weeks back, has been heard! Thanks to all of the 28,000+ of you have proved yet once again, that if we all come together and raise our voice as one, justice WILL be served. And a HUGE shoutout and thank you to Ms. Meenakshi Lekhi for fighting for this cause and women’s rights since the past 10 years! Today, in a significant judgement on absolute gender equality, passed by the Supreme Court of India, it has been directed that the WO’s be granted Permanent Commission in the army regardless of their service, except in combat roles. Also, the absolute exclusion of WO’s from Command Posts in the Army has been deemed Illegal by the SC. It also said that “absolute exclusion of women from command assignments is against Article 14 of the Constitution and unjustified. Centre's argument that women can be given only staff appointments is unenforceable.” In addition to this, the SC has given the Centre and the Indian Army three months to implement this ruling and put it in effect. This is a huge huge HUGE win for all of us, especially all the Women Officers of the Indian Army. I can’t even begin to express the happiness I’m feeling and how immensely proud I feel of our justice system for imparting justice and leaving no stone unturned with regards to Gender Equality in one of the biggest and the worlds 2nd largest military force.  And it’s all because of all of the 28000+ of you, that today, we have managed to create history!
