Give Women Command Posts in the Indian Army

I have dreamed of joining the Army ever since I was 15. Being a fauji daughter, I’ve craved the chance to defend India’s borders, pride and honor like my father did during the Kargil war

So you can imagine the disappointment of my 15-year self when I found out that the rules barred women from serving in the Infantry or holding Command Posts. Which, by the way, still remains the same

When women are surging ahead in so many fields, why should the defence services be any different. To anyone who says army personnel work in hostile areas is unsuitable for women, I have one word: Archana. Not many know that Army Officer Archana had created a bunker at the frontlines during the 1999 Kargil War.

It’s time for the Indian Army to do away with rules that discriminate on the basis of gender and let us daughters serve our nation.

Sign my petition asking the Defence Minister of India to amend the rules to consider army women for command posts and give them permanent commission.

Even the Supreme Court thinks it’s high time we treat women officers at par with men. A 2-judge bench recently told the Government to consider competent women for command positions.

After following the on-going arguments in the Supreme Court and speaking with women officers, I have realised that combat roles in the army are limited and the concerns of the army can be addressed by giving women permanent commission in whichever non-combat stream they are commissioned.

When the US Army can boast of sending its women officers to the front and giving them higher ranks, why should India, which has the 2nd largest military in the world’s lag behind!?

If India could have a woman as Prime Minister, as President and more recently even Defence Minister, why can’t we have women at the front, and one day as the Chief of Army Staff.

I believe the Government of India is capable of taking this progressive step forward. In 2019, the Ministry of Defence had announced that women officers who had been inducted for short service commission, will be able to pursue permanent careers in 10 branches of the Army. These included signals, engineers, army aviation, army air defence, electronics and mechanical engineers, army service corps, army ordinance corps and intelligence.

Let’s make sure that in this decade the Government makes a long-cherished dream for many Indian women come true by shattering the last glass ceiling in the armed forces.
