Give Us NovoLog; Give Us Life

The Issue

I am contacting you to appeal for the health and safety of myself and the diabetes community in the United States. I have Type 1 Diabetes for 12 years now, having been diagnosed as a seven-year-old in the second grade. Thank God, I have my diabetes under control and am healthy and well. I never had concerns that there would come a time that I would be worried and anxious about having insulin, my lifesaving medication, until recently. I have been using NovoLog insulin ever since I have been diagnosed, and it works really well for me. However, as soon as NovoLog's patent expired, and hundreds of generics for NovoLog popped up, my insurance stopped covering NovoLog because it was much more expensive. Since then, my diabetes care became hell. In the beginning, insurances were more lenient, honoring preauthorizations from my doctor and covering NovoLog for a bit longer. However, now it is IMPOSSIBLE to get approved for NovoLog, forcing me and all my friends with Type 1 Diabetes to have to use insulin generics that absolutely DO NOT WORK. (As an aside, how these generics got FDA approval is something I can't understand. Who were the diabetics that were part of the clinical trial that they were able to conclude that the generics work just as well as the brands??) I am really concerned about my health these days. The generic brands of insulin don't work, and my blood sugar is much higher all the time. I'm sure you know the terrible effects high blood sugar has on a person's health. I'm also really concerned about my prospects of starting a family. In order to have a healthy baby, blood sugars must be extremely controlled from conception till birth, something that is impossible with generic brand insulin. I started doing some research to see if it would be possible to buy NovoLog so that I can become pregnant, however, I quickly gave up. A 10 ml vial of NovoLog costs around $300, and I use an average of 4 of those a month! I know I am not the only one that's struggling with this. The entire diabetic community is at a loss. We rely on NovoLog to live and our key to life is taken from us. Help me by signing this petition to give us our lifesaving insulin.
