We understand that Maplewood Middle School wants to keep students safe and prevent people from tripping in the hallways. However, banning tote bags and drawstring bags because they can be a tripping hazard does not seem like the fairest solution.

Students use small bags for many important reasons. For girls especially, having a bag can provide a private and convenient way to carry feminine hygiene products, such as pads and tampons, without having to carry them openly through the school. Students also use bags to carry personal items, school supplies, water bottles, and other things they need throughout the day.

There is also a concern that banning these bags could actually create more problems in the hallways. Without a bag to keep their belongings together, students may have to carry multiple loose items. Things can be dropped, left on the floor, or scattered in crowded hallways, which could potentially create even more tripping hazards.

Instead of completely banning tote bags and drawstring bags, we think the school should consider reasonable rules about how they are carried. For example, students could be required to keep bags securely on their shoulders, use appropriately sized bags, or avoid carrying them in a way that blocks walkways.

We want Maplewood Middle School to be safe, but we also want the rules to recognize students' everyday needs. A complete ban may solve one possible problem while creating other problems for students.

We hope the school will reconsider the policy and work with students to find a solution that keeps the hallways safe without taking away a practical way for students to carry their personal belongings and feminine hygiene products.
