Students in Utica would love nothing more than to have no school on Halloween day and the day after. Many kids and teens want to have fun and engage in Halloween festivities. Having school on this day prevents our students from enjoying Halloween all day long on this national holiday. Many kids like to go out and Trick or Treat on Halloween night and stay up late. Some people also like to go to Halloween parties with friends and family and don’t get home until late. Having school the next day makes it very hard for kids to get up early and function at school. This means they either won’t be able to Trick or Treat for long, or they will end up staying out late. If students stay out late and have to wake up early in the morning, it will affect their ability to learn at school. Most kids end up tired and without work done.

If we continue to have school on this holiday, children won’t be able to enjoy this day to the fullest and have special memories for their future. We understand that there is a required amount of days that schools have to abide by for the school year. We are willing to forfeit 2 days of summer break in exchange for these 2 days. This will not have any impact on us, but having the two days for Halloween off, will. All of these reasons and more are why Utica Community Schools (UCS) should have 2 days off for Halloween.
