Yet another veteran of Britain's nuclear tests has died - alone, without a family or his medal.
Alfred Trott was 87 and told friends his time at Op Grapple on Christmas Island was the reason he never married or had a family. Friends are hunting for former RAF comrades, or distant relatives, to attend his funeral later this month.
It comes as the MoD admitted it never bothered to check if the servicemen who took part in the weapons tests were rendered infertile as a result. They also never bothered to check the rate of birth defects in their offspring, which is reported to be 10 times the national rate.
