The Issue

For more than 50 years, a flock of over 100 peacocks called a farm just north of Lake Moccasin Park home. They were fed daily, had shelter, and became a familiar and beloved part of the surrounding community.

Recently, the City of Clearwater purchased the property. Following the sale, the peacocks were left without the care and shelter they had depended on for generations. They were displaced from the property and scattered throughout the nearby Wood Valley neighborhood.

Today, these beautiful birds are struggling to survive.

Many residents have welcomed the peacocks into our neighborhood and enjoy having them as part of our community. But without consistent food and shelter, the birds are now forced to forage through residential yards and common areas, increasingly venturing onto busy roadways in search of food.

The situation is becoming increasingly concerning. Young birds are wandering into traffic, males are becoming aggressive, and the flock's numbers have declined following storms and vehicle strikes. Most recently, a peacock was struck and killed on 590 as well as caused several auto accidents on the same road.

We recognize that peacocks are considered non-native birds, and we understand the city has policies and responsibilities to consider. But we also believe this situation presents an opportunity for Clearwater to do something positive and compassionate.

The City now owns the very property these birds called home for more than 50 years. Why not turn this situation into something good for the birds and our community?

What We Are Asking Clearwater to Consider
Providing immediate feeding assistance and basic care for the remaining flock.
Exploring a designated peacock sanctuary or protected area on the former farm property or within Lake Moccasin Park.
Providing appropriate shelter and a safe place for the birds to live.
Partnering with neighborhood residents and animal welfare organizations to develop a manageable, sustainable solution.
This does not have to be an expensive or complicated undertaking. With some planning, community involvement, and city cooperation, we believe a practical solution is possible.

Clearwater has an opportunity to show that being a great city is about more than maintaining parks and properties. It is also about compassion, community involvement, and finding humane solutions when circumstances call for it.

Let's make this an example of what a community can accomplish when residents and local government work together.

We are asking Mayor Rector and the Clearwater City Council to work with us to give these birds a safe place to call home.

Please sign and share this petition. Together, we can give Clearwater an opportunity to do the right thing.

They called this place home for over 50 years. Let's give them a reason to stay.
