Give Texas Prisoners Three Meals a Day

To save money, Texas prison officials have stopped serving three meals a day to prisoners on the weekends. This is inhumane and prisoners should be given adequate nutrition.

I'm starting this petition because my dad is sick and in prison. He is currently taking treatments to keep his liver healthy and keep him alive and a side effect of the medication is that he will loose weight. Now that he is not receiving enough food to eat it is impossible for him to stay healthy.

Standards adopted by the American Correctional Association recommend that adult prisons serve three meals per day and does not state that variations of these standards can be implemented every weekend or as a cost-cutting measure. Additionally, Texas state law requires that county inmates be fed “three times in any 24-hour period."

Currently about 23,000 inmates in 36 prisons are eating two meals a day on Saturdays and Sundays. There are other ways to cut costs that do not involve risking the health of human beings just because they are in prison.

The Texas prison system should be evaluating why so many people are in prison and if they really need to be there at all.

Please join me in asking Texas officials to reinstate three meals for prisoners in Texas.
