Give students power over their own learning

Give students power over their own learning
Why this petition matters

We are very worried about the raging debate concerning privatization vs. public schooling in America. We believe that students are not given a seat at the table and are instead unwillingly being forced to participate in a system in which they do not have a meaningful say.
School districts often focus on curriculum and how teachers facilitate curriculum. This is the traditional way of doing things. Legislators decide the curriculum, school districts disseminate the curriculum, and teachers teach to the curriculum.
However, students are not considered in this model. We believe that students should have a more involved role in deciding what they want to learn and how they learn it.
Signing this petition indicates the following: that you are interested in giving students more choice in schools AND supporting initiatives that ask students to more freely and more often give their opinions concerning curricula and pedagogy in their schools.
We believe that time is of the essence. Privatization is on the rise and politics continues to interfere in the needs of students and their learning. The acquisition and maintenance of capital as it pertains to education is of major importance to politicians and legislators, which unfortunately may inevitably lead to the end of public school as we know it.
By supporting petitions that give students more choice in the classroom, we are fostering agency among our population. That means we are no longer ceding control of our learning over to lawmakers who are interested in nothing but the acquisition and maintenance of capital. It means that we give control over learning back to the people it actually affects most, the learners.
