Give Staten Island to New Jersey

We, the undersigned residents of New York City and concerned citizens, respectfully urge Mayor Mamdani and Governor Hochul to take immediate action to transfer Staten Island to the State of New Jersey.
This proposal is based on a simple and undeniable principle: nobody particularly wants Staten Island, and nobody particularly wants New Jersey.
For generations, Staten Island has existed in a complicated relationship with the rest of New York City. Geographically, it could easily belong to New Jersey, and it has long maintained a distinct identity, culture, and general vibe from the rest of NYC.
Meanwhile, New Jersey is already accustomed to being blamed for things it did not necessarily do.
We therefore believe that the most practical and mutually beneficial solution is to simply give Staten Island to New Jersey.
This arrangement would provide Staten Island with a state whose reputation and general public perception are already compatible with its own. New Jersey, in turn, would receive additional land without having to build it from scratch. New York City would be relieved of the responsibility of continuing to pretend that Staten Island is an essential component of the five-borough arrangement.
Importantly, this petition is not motivated by hostility toward Staten Islanders. On the contrary, we believe Staten Islanders deserve to live somewhere that genuinely wants them.
New York City would retain Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. New Jersey would receive Staten Island. Everyone would be given a reasonable amount of time to process the change.
This is not a complicated proposal. It does not require extensive studies, years of negotiations, or a blue-ribbon commission.
It simply requires leadership.
Mayor Mamdani, we respectfully ask that you give Staten Island to New Jersey.
For the good of New York City.
For the good of New Jersey.
And, most importantly, for the good of Staten Island.
