Give public schools control over athletic eligibility

Give public schools control over athletic eligibility
The Issue
As a parent of children attending public schools in Wisconsin, I am deeply concerned about the current policies imposed by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) regarding eligibility for high school sports. I believe that these rules should not be dictated by an external body but should instead be determined by the public schools themselves.
The WIAA's current regulations restrict the autonomy of public schools in making decisions that directly affect their students. School districts are fully equipped with the knowledge and understanding of their students' needs, circumstances, and best interests regarding academic achievements, physical capabilities, and personal situations. Allowing schools to set their athletic eligibility criteria ensures that these factors are well considered and tailored aptly to each unique community.
Statistics show that states with more autonomy at the school district level in athletic eligibility see positive educational outcomes and increased student participation rates. For example, research from the National Federation of State High School Associations indicates that student athletes who are governed by localized decision-making policies perform better in both athletics and academics due to their increased sense of belonging and support from their school community.
By granting public schools the authority to make eligibility decisions, we can promote a more inclusive environment where the development and well-being of all student-athletes are prioritized. It can contribute to enhanced student engagement, reduce dropout rates, and improve overall community satisfaction with local school policies.
It is crucial to prioritize the educational and developmental needs of young athletes by entrusting those who work closely with them on a daily basis: their teachers and school administrators. I urge the WIAA to consider revising its policy to empower our local schools to have a more significant say in determining athletic eligibility.
Join me in advocating for our children. Sign this petition to let our voices be heard and bring about the change needed to support students' growth and opportunities in Wisconsin schools. Let's bring the decision-making power back where it belongs—within our communities.
