Give Pepperdine Students AC to Prevent Heat-Related Illnesses in Heatwave and Future
Why this petition matters
According to the school's official website, "Pepperdine University is a private research university affiliated with Churches of Christ. Pepperdine's main campus consists of 830 acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the Pacific Coast Highway near Malibu, California."
Despite this, Pepperdine does not have AC in their dorms and subjects students to rely on fans instead. In the current heat wave, some rooms on campus have reached temperatures of 100 degrees F (38 degrees Celcius). Pepperdine has not helped its students in any way during this time.
According to Pepperdine Graphic's Article titles "Beating the Heat: Why There's No AC in the Dorms and What to Do About It", Robin Gore, the director of Pepperdine Housing Operations, said “To put air conditioning [in the dorms] would be a huge expense,” ....Students would then have to pick up that expense with the room rate. So in order to keep rates low, the university really thinks about what design features they can cut in order to keep our buildings top-of-the-line, yet affordable for students."
Pepperdine's 2022-2023 tuition without scholarships is $85,202 according to Pepperdine's Financial Aid section. Where is this money going and why can't a part of our tuition go to setting up A/C in the future? Pepperdine has instead put this money to a new event facility and buying space abroad for international programs.
Pepperdine needs to be held accountable for giving students an environment where they are at risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke. AC, especially in a California school, is essential during the summer months to improve everyone's health and well-being.
