THE SCIENTISTS AGREE

Today the Independent Sage Committee chaired by Sir David King, former government chief scientist, released a report which shows that the risk to children would be halved if they delayed the reopening of schools by just 2 weeks, til June 15th. Delaying opening until September would reduce the risk even further.
This supports what we all feared - that June 1st is too soon to be safe.
Also today after pressure from the teaching unions, the government finally published 12 documents presented to its Sage Committee of scientific advisors.
Union leaders said they found little in the documents to reassure staff or parents that the governments target of reopening on June 1st was a safe decision.
Both Independent Sage and Patrick Vallance, the governments chief scientific advisor said today that an effective test, track and trace system was necessary in the event of schools reopening.
I believe it was reckless of the government to announce that schools would be reopening without having previously released the scientific evidence or having a test, track and trace system up and running. This lack of transparency has led us to distrust the government further amidst the chaos.
