Give Non-Academic Kids a Better Future: Start Technical Apprenticeships at 14
The Issue
Every year, thousands of young people in the UK are pushed through academic exams that don’t suit them, don’t benefit them, and often leave them feeling like failures.
By the age of 14, many children know what kind of learners they are. Some are academic. But many others are practical, hands-on problem solvers—future engineers, builders, site managers, and tradespeople.
Right now, we force these kids to keep studying subjects that don’t inspire them. They become disengaged, lose confidence, and waste years in classrooms learning things they’ll never use—while the UK faces massive labour shortages in construction and engineering.
It’s time to change the system.
We are calling on the UK Government to:
Identify non-academic learners by age 14
Give them the option to attend specialist Technical Colleges focused on construction, engineering, and skilled trades
Start a 4-year practical apprenticeship program so they graduate at 18 with real qualifications and direct job placements
This isn’t about limiting opportunity—it’s about giving the right opportunity to the kids who need it most.
Why this matters:
It will help fix the skills shortage in UK construction, civil engineering, and renewable energy installation
It will stop wasting time, money, and resources forcing students through academic hoops that aren’t right for them
It will give young people confidence, purpose, and a clear path to a career they care about
Sign this petition if you believe:
Not all kids are academic—and that’s OK
We need a system that recognises different learning styles and talents
Practical learners deserve a real chance at a successful future
Let’s stop failing non-academic kids. Let’s give them the technical careers of tomorrow—starting today.
