Give Moorfield a Chance – Save Our Sporting Space

Moorfield Sports Club CIC has launched the “Give Moorfield a Chance” campaign to raise awareness and rally support for the former Moorfield Sports and Social Club site, once the proud home of Widnes Moorfield Tigers, Moorfield FC, and many other community sports groups.

This site has long been a cornerstone of local sport, offering vital space for teams, families, and young people to come together, stay active, and build community spirit. Since its closure in August 2021, the land has remained unused, and now faces the risk of being lost forever to development.

We are calling on Halton Borough Council and the landowners to come together and find a resolution that respects the needs of all stakeholders – especially the local community. With the site’s closure approaching the five-year mark in August 2026, Sport England will no longer be a statutory consultee in the planning process. This means the protections that once safeguarded spaces like Moorfield could soon be at risk.

In just a few short years, demand for sporting space has grown exponentially. Yet access to these spaces is increasingly reliant on private landowners, putting community sport at risk. We believe it’s time to reverse this trend,  to reclaim and repurpose spaces like Moorfield for the benefit of everyone.

Moorfield could be the first example of a new movement: one where communities rise together to protect and revive their sporting heritage. Let’s not allow this space to be lost. Let’s create our phoenix,  a symbol of renewal, resilience, and community pride.
