The Issue

For most students at Leeds Conservatoire, weekly 1-1 sessions provide an invaluable opportunity to get regular, personalised feedback and support. They are a staple of what makes LCon unique, and one of the most valuable parts of its courses.

From the 26/27 intake year, the Film, TV and Game students now only have 1-1 sessions every other week, halving the amount of this valuable feedback time we receive.

Like other conservatoire courses, we have a significant assignment workload, and many students also undertake composition projects outside of LCon. Regular feedback is vital to our development as composers, and for ensuring that we can meet assignment deadlines while producing work to the best of our abilities.

Having to wait two weeks between 1-1s limits our opportunities to discuss ongoing projects, address difficulties and make consistent progress. This is particularly significant in our first year, when we are establishing the foundations of our degree.

Whilst we appreciate the 1-1 tuition we do receive, we do not understand why we should be singled out, when other courses, including the 2nd and 3rd year Film Music students, continue to receive weekly sessions.

That is why we are requesting that our 1-1s should be scheduled every week, in line with the other courses receiving weekly tuition.

This petition is not a criticism of any LCon tutors or staff, merely a collective request for fair access to one of the most valuable parts of conservatoire study.

We ask Leeds Conservatoire to explain the reasoning behind the current arrangement, and take steps towards providing weekly 1-1s for our cohort.

Thank you for taking the time to consider our concerns.
