Give JBHS drama fair access to facilities

Give JBHS drama fair access to facilities
The Issue
The Jesse Bethel High School (JBHS) Drama Club has shown unwavering dedication to bringing performing arts to our community, despite facing numerous challenges. Since last year, our passionate drama students as well as the head of the drama department have persevered through issues like poor communication and restricted access to essential spaces, such as the Little Gym and the lighting room; Student's were even shouted at and accused of breaking into the lighting room after a site safety had opened it for them due to the drama head not being given a key to access it. These limitations force us to hold our rehearsals and activities in cramped classrooms, which are wholly inadequate for the performances we strive to deliver or for safely accommodating our equipment. We can only persevere so much.
Drama and theatre arts offer students vital opportunities for personal growth, creative expression, and community building. However, the current conditions severely undermine the potential of our drama program. The reality is that without proper facilities, students are unable to fully develop their skills and showcase the talent that we know exists within our school. We can not hold any drama experiences that we want to; we can not build the drama culture.
The situation demands the attention and intervention of the City Council and the Vallejo Board of Education. By granting us fairer access to the facilities at JBHS, our club could significantly enhance the quality of both our performances and the educational experience for all involved. Proper venues not only support performance practice but also include necessary technical aspects, such as lighting and sound equipment, which are key for any successful production.
Investing in the arts is an investment in our students' futures. According to a report from Americans for the Arts, students who participate in drama programs tend to have higher academic achievement and are more likely to be engaged in community and civic activities as adults. Thus, supporting us is a step towards fostering a well-rounded educational experience that values diverse talents and disciplines.
We urge all involved parties to prioritize the needs of the JBHS Drama department and Club. Your support means everything to our students, who pour their passion and energy into their craft. By improving access to necessary facilities, you will be nurturing future artists and leaders, helping them to create, inspire, and thrive.
Please join us in advocating for a fairer approach to our drama club's facility needs. Sign this petition to show that the JBHS Drama Club deserves every opportunity to succeed and shine. Together, we can make a difference.
