My new proposed musical notation system, each line above the staff represents a whole tone.
Instead of sharps and flats representing key signatures, the new patterns of dots and dashes on the stave and the position of the bass /treble clefs will be different representing the twelve different musical keys without outdated accidentals.
In my new system, the note C will be labelled ‘A’, C-sharp ‘B’ and so forth, ending with the B-natural designated as ‘L’. This move will be revolutionary with all twelve semitones of the Western scale accounted for.
Of course, as musicians we still use the terms “sharp” and “flat”, but only if a piano or guitar is out of tune or if a singer “misses” the right pitch by singing slightly sharp and slightly flat.
The petition is not to change the layout of the piano keyboard, but to revolutionise how we teach music theory, to give all notes individual “natural” names and quite simple to make sheet music easier to read for future generations!
