She never bowed to his strength. She demands respect as a senior, teases him back, gets annoyed, scolds him — she treats him like a person, not a weapon. That teasing-but-trusting dynamic is already there in canon. One short scene — a quiet conversation, a look, a hand on his shoulder — would have let him be human before the end.
