Support water safety education for every child in the U.S.!

Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death in the United States for children under five. Among kids 14 and younger, only car accidents claim more lives. On average, 10 Americans drown every day.

Take a moment to let that sink in. Then consider that formal swim lessons reduce the likelihood of childhood drowning by almost 90%.

With its ground-breaking Make a Splash initiative, the USA Swimming Foundation partners with more than 850 learn-to-swim providers to bring the -life-saving skill of swimming to millions of children nationwide.

In fact, since its inception in 2007, Make a Splash has helped deliver swim lessons to more than six million kids across all 50 states.

Everyone benefits from water safety education, but some communities are at greater risk than others:

  • Nearly 8 in 10 children from households earning less than $50,000 per year have no (or inadequate) swimming ability.
  • 64% of African American children don't know how to swim.
  • Children raised by parents who can't swim are four times less likely to learn fundamental water safety skills.

Providing elementary school children with basic water safety education and sharing the importance of formal swimming lessons addresses crucial knowledge gaps, allowing us to reach those families and communities at the greatest risk for drowning-related deaths.

With a wide reach and national media platform, the USA Swimming Foundation is perfectly positioned to make a difference. The first step is awareness, and the more we know, the more kids we can save.
