Give Congress Term Limits — One Standard for Everyone
Give Congress Term Limits — One Standard for Everyone
The Issue
This petition is not about supporting Donald Trump, Republicans, Democrats, or any other political figure. It is about establishing the same standard for everyone who serves in Congress.
We, the undersigned citizens, support establishing reasonable term limits for members of the United States House of Representatives and Senate.
Members of Congress are elected to serve the people. While experience and institutional knowledge have value, no individual should be able to hold federal legislative office indefinitely.
We support establishing a constitutional limit of:
Three terms (six years) for members of the House of Representatives
Two terms (twelve years) for members of the Senate
The purpose of term limits is not to favor one political party over another. The same limits should apply equally to Republicans, Democrats, Independents, and every other elected representative.
This issue has received renewed national attention, including support from President Donald Trump. However, this petition is not an endorsement of President Trump or his administration. A person does not have to agree with a politician on most issues to support a particular policy.
Likewise, support for congressional term limits should not disappear when political leadership changes.
If we believe term limits are appropriate, they should apply regardless of who holds power.
Congressional term limits would require a constitutional amendment rather than an ordinary federal law. We therefore call upon members of Congress and state legislators to take the necessary steps to advance a constitutional amendment establishing these limits.
This is about accountability, equal treatment, and giving Americans regular opportunities to choose new representatives.
One standard. One set of rules. Equal accountability.
If you agree that serving in Congress should be an opportunity for public service—not a lifetime political career, please sign and share this petition.
