The egregious nature of outdated strict, Colorado penalties has been an abstract that has strangled families and destroyed households for far too long. Though the injustices are countless, there are several instances of cases that are especially horrific. One example of these many instances is the case of Gary Apodaca. 

On his 23rd Birthday on November 17, 2020 after an argument between two groups led to the shooting death of Isiah Najera, Gary Apodaca was arrested and ultimately convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Gary was never accused of being the shooter but instead witnesses testified the opposite. Saying he attempted to deescalate the situation and at one point even told the alleged shooter to put the gun away. 

Though many people May have many opinions of Gary’s case, One thought most have in common is Gary Apodaca was over sentenced and even wrongfully convicted. Today, Gary’s family, along with hundreds of Colorado families are fighting for reform to ensure these types of injustices do not continue to tear apart families and communities. Not giving up Hope that Gary may eventually Return home to be with his children and his loved ones.
