The Issue

Calabasas High School Mock Trial team is asking LVUSD to give the advisor for the team a stipend of $1500-2000 for the school year of 2026-2027.

The team has existed for two school years and has competed in multiple competitions. Last year alone, around 40 students participated in the club during the year and spent hundreds of hours dedicated to learning the practice of law. When competing in the Los Angeles City competition, the team won both rounds, and two of the students, Rachel Lowe (class of 28) and Adelia Fakhr (class of 28), ranked in the top ten of their own respective roles. Under the leadership of Adir Lahav (28), Rachel Lowe (28), Sebastian Hunt (29), and Jack Shapiro (28), the club has been able to grow from not even five members the first day to enough members to fill two entire rosters. The team has also been fortunate to receive guidance from Westlake Law Firm's Nassar Abu-Gheida to advance as public speakers.

All of these achievements were achieved through the members' hard work and their own ambition; the main struggle has always been finding a room and a supervisor to host the club. Going through 4 teacher advisors in just one year and failing to consistently secure a classroom for after-school practice, the CHS Mock Trial team has had its potential stifled by these constrictions.

The advisor would support the team through weekly lunch meetings, at least 4 hours of after-school practice a week, and would attend competitions and scrimmages. Because of the time commitments, we believe that the teacher deserves an extra stipend for all the help. The requested stipend would not fund the creation of a new extracurricular program; it would provide the stability necessary for an existing, student-supported program to operate effectively.

That is why the team is asking for a stipend for the advisor for the 2026-2027 school year. Having the security of a permanent advisor is essential to achieve the team's goal of reaching state during the school year.

In order for the team to rise up to its potential, we ask LVUSD to support our team.

Thank you.
