Give Bridges Kids in Corvallis (509J) Their Own Swing Set
The Issue
We are a Bridges family in Corvallis School District 509J asking the district to install a swing set on the Bridges program grounds.
Bridges serves neurodivergent children from elementary through high school. For many of these students, including my child VR, swinging every day is not just play — it is how they regulate emotionally and physically, feel safe in their body, and get back to learning.
Right now, Bridges has no playground. No swing set.
When our kids need to swing, staff must walk them 10 minutes to Adams Elementary. But, only if Adams kids aren't there or 15-20 minutes across a busy street to a public park.
Our kids don't regulate on a schedule. When VR needs to swing, they need it now.
This current system creates problems for everyone:
a. It takes staff away from kids. At least one staff member must leave to go to Adams, at least two must leave to go to the public park. That leaves fewer adults to support the kids who remain at Bridges.
b. It creates a safety risk. Making a dysregulated child wait and walk far increases the chance they may hurt themselves or others at Bridges, at Adams, and in the community.
c. It tells our kids they are not a priority. Many Bridges students will spend their entire school career in this program without ever integrating back to a traditional classroom. They deserve a safe place to play where they learn.
Our family has offered financial resources to help make this happen and has been met with silence. We are ready to fundraise, volunteer, and rally community support.
We respectfully ask Corvallis School District 509J to:
a. Approve the installation of a swing set on Bridges grounds for the 2026-27 school year
b. Work with Bridges parents and staff to select safe, inclusive equipment, including adaptive swings
c. Provide a timeline and a contact person for the project
Every child deserves a safe place to play where they learn. Please sign to show VR and all the Bridges kids that our community stands behind them.
