The issue

Living in Akaroa is a dream come true for many of us. It’s a small, picturesque town nestled on the Banks Peninsula, with breathtaking landscapes and a tight-knit community. Dogs play an integral role in our lives, providing companionship and enhancing the beauty of the daily experiences we cherish here. However, the absence of a dedicated dog park is putting our community and our beloved pets at risk.

Incidents of dogs roaming freely, uncontrolled, have become increasingly common. While most owners maintain a responsible approach to walking their dogs, there are unfortunate instances where dogs attack or frighten other dogs and people, creating an atmosphere of unease. Families are becoming apprehensive about letting their children play in open spaces, fearful of unexpected encounters with loose dogs.

This pressing issue calls for an immediate solution: the development of a safe, designated dog park in Akaroa. Such a park would not only offer a secure environment for our dogs to exercise and socialize but also encourage responsible pet ownership. It would allow dog owners to gather, share tips, and foster a community supportive of both pets and people.

Designated dog parks have proven successful in numerous towns and cities across New Zealand and around the world. They help mitigate risks associated with uncontrolled dogs in public areas and promote harmonious coexistence within communities. In addition, they provide dog owners with the peace of mind that their pets can enjoy the outdoors without posing a risk to others.

We propose the town allocate a parcel of land, within reasonable accessibility for all, to develop a dog park. It should include secure fencing, waste disposal facilities, shaded areas, and space for both small and large dogs to play safely. Implementing these facilities would create a healthier, more vibrant environment for everyone in Akaroa.

We urge the Akaroa community leaders and local council to prioritize the planning and construction of this much-needed dog park. Let’s come together to ensure our beloved pets, as well as residents, have a safe space to enjoy.
