Stop Killing Orangutans for Palm Oil

The Issue

Palm oil is in 50% of the products you find in your local shopping center or store. It makes potato chips crispy, soaps soapy, and is in many other products we use on a daily basis as well.

So you may ask, what's the problem? Well, according to WWF,

"Palm oil is the most widely consumed vegetable oil on the planet, and it is in about half of all packaged products sold in the supermarket. While palm oil is the most efficient source of vegetable oil, its rapid expansion threatens some of the planet’s most important and sensitive habitats.

Palm oil grows in tropical rainforests, and the uncontrolled clearing of these forests for conventional palm oil plantations has led to widespread loss of these irreplaceable and biodiverse rich forests. Plantations have also been connected to the destruction of habitat of endangered species, including orangutans, tigers, elephants and rhinos.

The good news you don't have to give up products containing palm oil! If can be produced in a responsible manner that respects the environment and the communities where it is commonly grown."

This petition in particular targets companies who scored low on the Palm Oil Scorecard of 2015, which means that that unsustainably source their palm oil, and kill our wildlife in the process.

For more info on the scorecard, visit this website: http://www.ucsusa.org/global-warming/stop-deforestation/palm-oil-scorecard-2015#.VtcQevkrLIU

We are asking these brands to make a commitment to sustainably sourcing their palm oil, and letting them know that WE WILL NOT BUY THEIR PRODUCTS until they decide to listen to the consumers and make that commitment. We refuse to give business to a company who has no respect for our wildlife or planet, and will no longer let big businesses tear down our forests and kill our wildlife.

WWF:

"COMPANIES SHOULD:

-Join the RSPO and be an active member;
-Cover all of their palm oil use with CSPO from any of the supply chain options;
-Be transparent about their palm oil use;
-Commit to sourcing 100% CSPO from Mass Balance or Segregated supply chains by (now 2017) at the very latest;
-Start investing in traceable supply chains of CSPO;
-For retailers, go beyond own-brand commitments and take responsibility for making sure all palm oil they sell is sustainable;
-Raise awareness of the RSPO and CSPO globally;
-Buy from certified RSPO member growers that are going beyond the basic requirements of the RSPO.

CONSUMERS CAN:

-Only shop from companies that have committed to and are using CSPO;
-Look for the RSPO trademark on products;
-Ask retailers to source CSPO products for everything they sell, not just their own brands;
-Ask manufacturers to source CSPO and commit to 100% CSPO by 2015 or sooner;
-Contact WWF to find out about other ways to get involved with our work."

You see, many companies are just tearing down the forests entirely in order to get palm oil, instead of just taking the fruits from the trees. Palm oil is in our lipsticks, soaps, ice cream, butter, packaged bread, cookies, detergent, and much more.

According to https://www.rainforest-rescue.org/topics/palm-oil ,

"New estimates suggest that 98% of the forest may be destroyed by 2022, the lowland forest much sooner."

Today, rainforest area the equivalent of 300 soccer fields is being destroyed every hour. This gives rise to numerous problems for the climate, environment, and people living in the forest"

Why is palm oil not listed as an ingredient on most products?
Only a few manufacturers – mostly in the organic sector – label their products as containing palm oil and palm fat. Most companies disguise it, referring to it as “vegetable oils and fats”.

Please visit rainforest-rescue.org for a chart of the other common names for palm oil that companies use to trick consumers into thinking there's no palm oil in their products.

SIGN this petition to save Orangutans, Tigers, and other wildlife by encouraging big brands to join in on sustainable palm oil production.

After you sign, please contact the companies by either email or phone to tell them to make the commitment to sustainably produce their palm oil.:
