More recess time for students

Our children attending elementary school in Toms River (specifically Silver Bay) currently get only 35 minutes for lunch AND recess. From speaking to other parents and children, what I’ve found is: kids are either rushing to eat (which can be a choking hazard), forgoing eating so they can play, or only getting to play 5-10 minutes to play, especially if they have to wait in line to buy lunch. All of these scenarios are absolutely unacceptable.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that children participate in 60 minutes of “moderate to vigorous activity per day,” and suggested that recess be part of that. “Recess is a necessary break in the day for optimizing a child’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development,” the AAP wrote in a 2013 policy statement. “In essence, recess should be considered a child’s personal time, and it should not be withheld for academic or punitive reasons.”
There are studies upon studies that cite benefits of recess, socialization, and physical activity for school aged children.
We propose 30 minutes of recess and 30 minutes of lunch, where lunch does not impact the amount of recess the students receive.
Our children deserve better than this and I hope you all agree and can help us in supporting this worthy cause and changing the schedule for next year!!!!!
