DOG AND CAT ABUSERS IN UGANDA are breaking their bones, badly burning them, dousing them with boiling water, cutting off their limbs - and keeping the animals locked up and starving to get donations through social media.

Major nonprofit organizations, including Animal Hope Uganda​, Animal-Kind International, and Uganda SPCA, are fighting the uphill battle against animal cruelty in Uganda. Recently, they have warned animal lovers not to fall into the trap of donating to people they meet on social media, which has become a mecca for fraudulent activity. These scammers exploit human kindness by ensuring that the money donated goes to the care of the animals, however, the money is used to fund their lifestyles - buying iPhones, clothes, electronics, cars and other goods - instead.

It is crucial that we ensure our donations are going to responsible, ethical organizations that truly work to improve animal welfare rather than cause intentional harm to the animals. Please respond to this call by not donating to unverified entities on social media. If you donate to individuals or groups that are not registered you are encouraging scammers to torture and starve dogs and cats for more money. If a person refuses to give you their information, they are a scam. 

Instead, donate only to reputable organizations by calling their department of state to confirm their status. You can also check their veterinary standing by calling their veterinary state board. In Uganda, you can request registration information and have it verified against data from the Uganda NGO Forum as well as URSB for certification. Also, ask for their veterinarian's details and verify their license with the Uganda Veterinary Board to ensure they are authorized to practice. If you have donated to these scams through PayPal, GoFundMe, Donorbox or other financial institutions, please take necessary action and file a fraud report.

By signing this petition, we aim to pressure the government, police - who are often paid off by the scammers to stay silent (three out of four Ugandans (77%) say that “most” or “all” members of the police are corrupt), and animal welfare agencies to investigate these claims thoroughly, take stringent action on these fraudulent practices, and ensure that the animals are rescued from this horrifying situation. We also aim to urge social media platforms, fundraising platforms, and online financial institutions to increase security measures. Join us to put a stop to these inhumane tactics, protect the animals from harm, and uphold integrity in seeking donations for animal welfare.
