Get the EU to Approve Innovative, Sustainable Straw Alternatives

UPDATE
Dear supporters,
thank you very much for signing our campaign. Your engagement has helped make consumer sentiment visible and has contributed to a broader discussion around usability, recycling, and sustainable packaging solutions.
We would like to briefly explain the core of the issue in plain language, as it is often misunderstood:
- The current EU regulation on single‑use plastics (SUPD) primarily targets littering, especially loose items that end up in the environment. In the case of Capri‑Sun, the straw is attached to the pouch and disposed of together with it, which means littering is not the key issue here.
- At the same time, a second EU regulation (PPWR) focuses on recycling and recyclability. This is where a practical problem arises: the paper straw must be separated from the plastic pouch, which almost never is done by consumers and as a consequence, the paper straw contaminates the plastic recycling stream, making recycling and reuse less effective.
The petition was launched in 2024 as one element within a wider dialogue – to highlight practical challenges with the current paper straw and to show how strongly consumers care about functionality and recyclability.
Thanks to your support, the petition achieved its goal of creating attention at EU level. As this dialogue with the European Commission was successfully initiated before reaching one million signatures, it was no longer necessary to actively promote the petition further.
Since then, the conversation has moved to where meaningful progress can be made: formal regulatory processes and expert‑level dialogue with EU institutions and relevant stakeholders. Our primary focus is now on achieving regulatory clarity, rather than collecting 1 million signatures. For this reason, the petition is no longer active.
Capri‑Sun will continue to engage constructively with regulators, experts and partners. Our aim is to support fact-based evidence that the two regulations SUPD and PPWR are currently contradicting each other in practice, and to help find a balanced, responsible solution that aligns regulatory requirements with recyclability, sustainability and everyday usability.
At the same time, we advocate for sufficient flexibility in regulation to allow for a broader range of innovative alternatives – including options such as bio‑based or biodegradable materials (e.g. PLA) – where these contribute to improved overall sustainability performance.
Thank you once again for your support and for being part of this important conversation.

UPDATE
Dear supporters,
Thank you so much for backing our campaign to bring back recyclable plastic straws for Capri-Sun! Your support means a lot to us.
We've been working hard to find even better solutions for our consumers while keeping the environment in mind and we are happy to report that we have found alternative materials that act like plastic but are made from natural, biodegradable materials!
However, currently this material is not allowed under the Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD), due to a too strict regulatory definition. The directive is too black and white: it's paper or nothing. We need your help to get the EU to authorize innovative, new solutions as an alternative for plastic. Join in, help to spread the word, and gather more signatures for our campaign!
We'll keep you updated on our progress. Thank you for your continued support!

Dear Capri-Sun Fans,
We need your help to make a positive change! At Capri-Sun, we're committed to innovating towards more sustainable solutions, whilst balancing convenience and functionality for consumers. We know that the switch to paper straws in 2021 hasn’t been ideal for many of you as it is less functional, and the pouch and paper straw need to be separated for recycling which is not always practical.
We believe there’s a better way. Our old pouch was made of multiple materials and couldn’t be recycled. Earlier this year, we introduced a new pouch made from recyclable mono-material (PP). Our goal is to bring back recyclable plastic straws so that both the pouch and the straw can be recycled together. This way, you can dispose of both easily, without the paper straw polluting the recycling process.
Together we can do it! With your support, we can take a big step toward improving the overall recyclability of our products while at the same time ensuring a better usability. We need 1 million signatures to show the European Commission why this matters. Join us - sign the petition today!
SOME PROOF POINTS UNDERLINING OUR INITIATIVE
- Innovation at Capri-Sun: At Capri-Sun we are fully aware of our responsibility towards the planet. The past years we have spent innovating our iconic pouch and develop a new model made of recyclable monomaterial Polypropylen (PP). Our 330ml pouch has already been transitioned to monomaterial (PP) across Europe, the 200ml pouch will follow next. Once fully introduced this will save approx. 2.300t of aluminum from going to landfill while ensuring full recyclability of our packaging.
- Advantages of our pouch: Our monomaterial pouch made of PP has the lowest CO2 footprint of any beverage package, it uses 5x less plastic than a PET bottle of the same format and is much lighter than any other beverage packaging. So overall, it needs less material while ensuring full recyclability so that all material used can find its way back into new material.
- Life-Cycle-Analysis (LCA) of pouch underlines environmental proof-points: Our recyclable mono-material pouch was examined, tested and positively confirmed by the independent Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IFEU Heidelberg) as part of a comprehensive “Life-Cycle-Analysis (LCA)” compared to commercially available packaging materials (such as disposable and reusable bottles, aluminum cans, glass bottles, composite beverage cartons).
