As of mid-August 2018, the Hot Country Music playlist on Spotify featured only 3 female solo artists out of 60 songs. This breakdown is not unusual and is a regular aspect of Spotify's country playlists. Many other genres on Spotify are also suffering from these oppressive decisions made by Spotify that ignore the women and non-binary artists who are out there working hard every day. 

While this is prominent on radio as well, other services such as Apple Music and Tidal do not have this issue. Apple Music's Country Wide playlist features 19 male artists and 18 female artists. This makes it even stranger that Spotify has not made any move to change and disproves their argument that the playlists are picked because of an algorithm. Obviously, if Apple can find success with diverse playlists, Spotify could do the same.

I believe that the best music should be featured on playlists and that Spotify is purposefully ignoring female artists who have the same streaming numbers as their male counterparts. Additionally, Spotify is not giving the same opportunities to emerging female artists as they are giving new male artists as is evident in their playlist choices. 

I propose that we ask Spotify to agree to a 50/50 split between Female and Male artists on their flagship country playlists. By signing this petition, you are voicing your concern over their playlisting choices that further the gender inequality that is prevalent in country music. Additionally, you are asking them to make the playlist process a fair one. We don't ask that female artists are treated with extra privileges, we ask that female artists are considered fairly.
