Given the success that superhero movies have had in the last decade, or two decades, many famous filmmakers have expressed their discontent and blame movies of this type for the fact that people no longer go to see superhero movies. author or independent cinema to the big screen. Among the most famous directors who have spoken on the subject are Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Alejandro González Iñárritu and Francis Ford Coppola, but more and more voices are added.

Samuel L. Jackson, an actor with an extensive career in Hollywood, recognized by critics and the public, has become famous in recent years for his role as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and for that reason he was questioned in Interview with The View (via Variety) about the criticism that superhero movies receive from famous filmmakers. This was his response:

Movies are movies. Those are the movies he went to see when he was a kid. And the art of making a movie is something that was a mystery for a long time. Making movies is no longer a mystery. The kids know how to do it on their phones. So it’s easy for [los directores] rule it out, just because people aren’t going to see your movie.

His words seem like a direct response to what he said Martin Scorsese more than two years ago, that what Marvel does “is not cinema.” Said by the director of Taxi Driver –  98% were referring not only to Marvel itself, but to superhero movies in general. Jackson continued:

It’s like we’ve been dumbed down, but it’s always been that way. When we were younger, people went to see cowboy movies, and they went to see other superhero movies, they had superheroes on TV. When you tell a serious story, yes, you find a niche audience, the same thing keeps happening. People go to the movies to feel better and get out of their daily existence.
This is not the first time Samuel L Jackson defends superhero movies, recently in an interview with The Times criticized the Academy for not nominating Spider-Man: No Way Home for an Oscar  92%, a film that achieved what seemed impossible, filling movie theaters massively. This is what he said on that occasion:

They should have an Oscar for Most Popular Movie. Because that’s what business is about. [Spider-Man] He did what movies have always done: he took people into a big dark room. All movies are valid. Some go to the movies to get very excited. Some like superheroes. […] There are people who have had successful careers but no one can recite a line from their parts.
Superhero movies began to become massively popular when the quality of movies began to improve, with productions like X-Men –  81%, Spider-Man –  89% and Batman Starts –  84% started a new era for the subgenre, and since then the popularity of superheroes has been on the rise. The Marvel Cinematic Universe emerged in 2008 with Iron Man – The Iron Man –  93%, and thus began a new stage.
