Spider-Man: No Way Home In The Running For Recognition At The Oscars

Spider-Man: No Way Home has landed a nomination in a fan-favorite category for top cheer moment that was introduced by The Academy.

The three web-slinging heroes fighting together for the first time in Spider-Man: No Way Home has landed the film an opportunity to be recognized for top cheer moment at the Academy Awards. A few weeks ago, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed two new categories that would allow fans to vote for their favorite film of 2021 and the most cheer-worthy moment of all time.

As fans’ votes poured in, one of the top-voted cheer moments was the team up between Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man: No Way Home, landing the film an official nomination in the category. While there won’t be a physical award or statuette handed out to the categories’ winners, it still offers popular films the chance to be recognized on the big night. The battle isn’t over yet as Spider-Man: No Way Home is up against four competitors, one of which is a Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart.

Apart from the blockbuster film, some of the other moments to have gotten a nomination in the category include the “Avengers assemble” scene in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, Keanu Reeves' Neo dodging bullets in 1999’s The Matrix, Jennifer Hudson's performance of “And I Am Telling You” from 2006’s Dreamgirls, and the "Flash Speed Force" scene from 2021’s Zack Snyder's Justice League. Fans can now use #OscarsCheerMoment on Twitter to vote for their favorite moment. Select fans could even win prizes for casting their votes.

Fans have appreciated the launch of these fan-favorite categories by The Academy. In the past, fans have complained about The Academy only awarding more serious films and snubbing those that are commercially successful. When the nominations for this year's Oscars were announced, many fans, including famous personalities, were outraged that Spider-Man: No Way Home had been ignored for the most prestigious categories. Jimmy Kimmel expressed his anger during an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC, whereas Kevin Smith criticized the Academy Awards on his Fatman Beyond podcast.

Spider-Man: No Way Home has broken several records since its release on December 17, 2021. It is currently the third highest-grossing film at the domestic box office and has secured the sixth spot on the global box office list. It wasn’t surprising to see that fans nominated the film for a popular category, and even though winning wouldn’t secure the film an Oscar, it would pacify many fans around the world.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is showing in theaters.
