Get rid of the social media ban in Australia for under 16's
The issue
I was excited about getting social media, especially TikTok, and was almost 13 when the ban was introduced. Now I understand the reasons, but is it fair to take social media away from everyone just because some misuse it? Is it right for a few careless individuals to ruin opportunities for responsible and mature young people who use it as intended—for talking, sharing photos, connecting over interests, creating videos, listening to music, and maintaining relationships? In my opinion, and in the opinion of many others, this isn’t fair or right. I know it can be harmful through bullying, sharing photos without permission, or grooming, but why extend the ban to those over 16? Children’s brains don’t fully mature until their late 20s or early 30s, yet people bypass the ban all the time. Research from internet regulators and universities shows that over 80% of teenagers aged 10–15 still use social media within months of the ban. You might think petitions are useless, but they can make a difference. Social media helps connections, which is something that everyone needs, young or old. Every signature helps. Consider how you feel about the ban—if enough people sign against it, maybe we can make a change. Please sign and help us try to make a difference.
Thank you!!!
