The issue

Nunweek Park, nestled in Harewood, Christchurch, holds a special place in the lives of our community families. For me and my family, it is more than just a park; it is a community hub where my children, like many others, engage in sports activities. However, over the last three decades, this beloved park has been overshadowed by a lack of necessary infrastructural development, which is preventing it from reaching its full potential as a community asset.

The most recent major development in Nunweek Park was the addition of an all-weather hockey turf back in 2012-13. For those who frequent the park, this seems like an eternity ago. Before that, around 2004-5, there may have been some upgrades in terms of irrigation and drainage on the grass fields. The last substantial above-ground infrastructure—our toilet block—dates back to 1988. Sadly, the outdated toilet facilities have become a pressing concern, especially during sports events, as they overflow when the park is bustling with activity.

Nunweek Park serves as a vital space for many local sports organizations and schools, enabling year-round activities and sports events. Yet, the ageing infrastructure, particularly the sanitary facilities, the lack of sufficient seating, sheltered areas, and upgraded sports amenities, have hampered its usability and appeal. This park is an integral part of the Norwest community, and it is time for Christchurch City Council (CCC) to take actionable steps toward enhancing its facilities.

To maximize its potential and benefit the Norwest community to the fullest, we urge CCC to recognize the urgent need for investment in Nunweek Park. We need more than just a facelift; we need practical and impactful enhancements that include modern and spacious sanitary facilities, additional seating and shaded areas, improved sports fields, and regular maintenance schedules. These improvements will not only support the existing activities but also encourage more local organizations and community members to utilize the park.

This is our rallying cry. Let's ensure that Nunweek Park remains a cherished community asset for generations to come. Sign this petition to call on CCC to commit to upgrading Nunweek Park, securing its role as a vibrant community hub for all."
