El problema

Horse-drawn carriages remain a popular tourist attraction in many European cities. Behind this romantic image, however, horses are required to work in busy urban environments, facing traffic, noise, crowded streets, hard surfaces, and increasingly extreme temperatures.

Despite growing concerns about animal welfare, horses continue to be used for tourist rides in cities across Europe. Incidents involving injuries, accidents, and heat stress have repeatedly raised questions about whether this practice still has a place in modern tourism.

We believe Europe's historic cities can preserve their heritage without relying on animal labour. Humane alternatives such as electric carriages, walking tours, and other sustainable visitor experiences already exist.

We are calling on the European Union, national governments, and city councils to phase out horse-drawn tourist carriages and support animal-friendly alternatives.

Tourism should reflect the values of a modern society: compassion, responsibility, and respect for animals.
