Ohio residents should never be pressured into supporting the policies or actions of a foreign government in order to work, participate in public contracts, or exercise their constitutional rights.

Current Ohio laws connected to anti-BDS policies create serious concerns about free speech, political expression, and government overreach. These laws discourage citizens from participating in peaceful boycotts or publicly criticizing the actions of the Israeli government, including the ongoing destruction and humanitarian crisis in Gaza that many people around the world describe as genocide.

No matter where someone stands politically, Americans should be able to agree that peaceful protest and political boycotts are protected forms of free expression. Throughout American history, boycotts have been used to fight injustice — from the Civil Rights Movement to protests against apartheid in South Africa. Ohio should not treat this form of protest differently simply because it involves Israel.

Many Ohio citizens do not want their tax dollars, laws, or government institutions tied to policies that appear to protect a foreign government from criticism while limiting the speech rights of Americans.

This petition calls on Ohio lawmakers to repeal or reform laws that:
• Restrict protected political speech related to Israel
• Require political loyalty certifications for contractors
• Discourage peaceful boycotts and activism
• Prioritize foreign political interests over the constitutional rights of Ohio residents

Ohio should stand for freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and equal rights for all people. Citizens should never fear professional or legal consequences for peacefully opposing war crimes, human rights abuses, or violence against civilians anywhere in the world.

We are asking Ohio representatives to protect the constitutional rights of their constituents and ensure that no American is punished for peaceful political beliefs, activism, or criticism of any government.
