In March of 2025, Smith County passed the 287(g) Task Force Model, an agreement with I.C.E that grants officers most of the powers of immigration enforcement agents. Since then, the immigrant community in Tyler has grown fearful. Additionally, I.C.E agents have gotten increasingly more violent around the country, with them using tear gas and pepper spray to disperse crowds, raiding workplaces and schools, murdering witnesses, kidnapping people and taking them in unmarked vehicles, and even physically and sexually assaulting people they detain. This petition serves as proof that the community of Tyler stands with immigrant communities, and that we want I.C.E out of Tyler, especially an end to the 287(g) Task Force Model. We should not wait until the violence we see around the country reaches us before we start acting.
