Minister Gerry Ritz of CFIA we demand CHANGE
The Issue
GHFAS writes DEMANDING IMMEDIATE CHANGE regarding CFIA's blatant violations of The Health of Animals Regulations Act, Part XIII, Sections 143 (1), (d), and (e).
Dehydrated pigs, chickens packed on top of one another, and cows covered in their own feces will no longer be tolerated. Golden Horseshoe Farmed Animal Save (GHFAS) has witnessed the plight that these, (and other animals) are enduring while being transported by CFIA to slaughter. Many animals are experiencing abuse at the hands of their handlers and even dying on these horrific journey's.
On July 27th, 2015, several individuals with GHFAS and Toronto Pig Save documented their observations of pigs gasping for air in the extreme heat, clearly dehydrated and foaming from their mouths. In 40 degree temperatures, the pigs were panting frantically, having to endure conditions where they could not move, and being cramped one on top of another. Approaching the trucks, we can feel the extreme heat radiating from it. Several individuals offered the pigs water which these animals accepted in desperation. Last year on July 2nd 2014, GHFAS witnessed pigs suffering heat stroke and even some who had already succumbed to a miserable death. Despite our efforts to demand improved conditions, there has been no change as of yet. This unacceptable torture of sentient beings must end and end NOW.
According to federal transport regulations, which can be found in the Health of Animal Regulations Act, Part XII, Sections 143(1)(d) and (e): 143: (1) No person shall transport or cause to be transported any animal in a railway car, motor vehicle, aircraft vessel, crate or container if injury or undue suffering is likely to be caused to the animal by reason of (d) undue exposure to the weather, or (e) inadequate ventilation. Several petitions have been formulated and thousands of signatures obtained in support of our efforts to demand you follow the federal transport regulations. However, as our organization Golden Horseshoe Farmed Animal Save has witnessed and documented over the past year, you remain in gross violation of these federal codes and are hereby being called upon to immediately abide by the federal transport regulations mentioned herein.
We DEMAND you make the necessary changes required by the federal transport regulations immediately. Golden Horseshoe Farmed Animal Save refuses to remain silent while CFIA continues to violate the federal transport regulations. There is NO EXCUSE for living, breathing, sentient beings to be abused and neglected to the point that they actually perish in route to an already horrifying and immoral demise.

Pig Facts.
• Newborn piglets learn to run to their mothers voice and recognize their own names.
• Pigs are clean animals : If given sufficient space, they will be careful not to soil the area where they sleep or eat. Pigs don’t “sweat like pigs”; they are actually unable to sweat. They like to bathe in water or mud to keep cool, and they actually prefer water to mud.
• In their natural surroundings, pigs spend hours playing, sunbathing, and exploring.
• Pigs dreams, much like humans too: They snuggle close to one another and prefer to sleep nose to nose.
• Pigs communicate constantly with one another
• According to Professor Donald Broom of the Cambridge University Veterinary School, “[Pigs] have the cognitive ability to be quite sophisticated. Even more so than dogs and certainly [more so than human] 3-year-olds.” Professor Stanley Curtis of Penn State University has found that pigs can play joystick-controlled video games and are “capable of abstract representation.” Dr. Curtis believes that “there is much more going on in terms of thinking and observing by these pigs than we would ever have guessed.”
