The Issue

 IMMEDIATE REQUEST!

On June 18, 2005, a 15-year old high schooler, Gerald Santos, from Navotas City, Philippines surprised the Philippines' household audiences who were watching the nationwide search for GMA-7 Pinoy Pop Superstar (PPS).  He sang a soulful rendition of an Old Pilipino Music (OPM) entitled, "HANGGANG"!  His judges gave him an unprecedented and an almost perfect score of 99%!

On May 5, 2006, Gerald Santos at age 16, the youngest contestant, emerged victoriously as the grand winner for the Second Season of Pinoy Pop Super Star (PPS).  His prizes which were worth in the millions of pesos had an added bonus, a 5-year contract with GMA-7, one of the largest tv stations in the country.

He was included in various game shows, musicals, and tv drama series.  Then, recorded five studio albums and did numerous concerts.  Gerald Santos was then branded as the "PRINCE OF BALLAD"!

A year before contract expiration, Gerald Santos and his Manager, Rommel Ramilo, elected to opt out on Gerald Santos' 5-year contract with the tv station.  Both GMA-7 Management and Gerald Santos with his Manager, Rommel Ramilo, settled amicably, with no recourse.

Gerald Santos transferred himself to a tv station competitor, Channel 5!  This transfer made him more independent to do other musicals like concerts and also stage plays.  He also dabbled in the big screen and was in the cast of "DECEPTION", "TOGS", and "MAMASAPANO".

The exposure of his talent and hard work in musicals and stage plays did not go unnoticed.  "ALIW AWARDS FOUNDATION" had nominated him as a yearly entry for his trending concerts, to receive various awards of distinction from the years 2011 till 2020.  Out of his five nominations and wins, three major concerts propelled him to "ALIW AWARD FOUNDATION HALL OF FAME" most recently, on Dec. 11, 2023.

He had musical plays in different live play theatres in the country.      He went on tour in 2011 for the musical play, "SINO KA BA, DR. JOSE RIZAL?" This was followed by "SAN PEDRO CALUNSOD" IN 2012 and       "I WILL" IN 2021!  In Singapore, "SWEENEY TODD" was his first out of   the country musical play in 2019 which introduced him to int'l live musical play!

In March, 2016, the "MISS SAIGON" Productions' talent search team were in Manila, Philippines.  Armed with over ten years of experience in concert scenes and live musical plays, Gerald Santos showed up on the first day  of audition.  He was given his attendee number at 10:00 AM and was called in at 4:00 PM for his audition.  His first song, "KIM'S NIGHTMARE", which he aptly prepared for, must have been good enough, as he received a callback slip for March 18, 2016.

In this round, he sang "THUY'S DEATH" and "THUY'S INTERVENTION.  The song numbers he performed must be really good and impressive.   He received a second callback slip for March 21, 2016.

This time, it was for dancing and ensemble day.  Although dancing is not his idea of an audition, he did try and put his best foot forward, to impress.  In the middle of his dancing, he was called to the adjacent room, full of top guns of the "MISS SAIGON PRODUCTIONS" talent search team!  He was instructed how to act not as a villain, but also a victim of the circumstances.  That impression of how he sang and acted as a victim under such circumstances must have been the finale of his arduous audition.

On March 23, 2016, the last and final callback slip was to meet with  the composer himself, Claude-Michel Schonberg.  Gerald Santos sang, "THUY'S INTERVENTION" with piano accompaniment.  He sang three songs of Thuy, four times of each, to the composer's delight.  Later, he then realized, he had the seal of approval from Schonberg, himself.

On Dec. 23, 2016, "MISS SAIGON" Productions offered Gerald Santos a contract subject to renewal, for the role of Thuy, which he gladly accepted.  By March, 2017, he was on his way to int'l stardom via London to start his rehearsals with all other new members of the ensemble.

Gerald Santos went on tour with the "MISS SAIGON-LONDON" Productions and amazed the audiences with his stellar performances as Thuy, 553 times in different musical play theatres in London, Ireland,        Germany, and Switzerland.

In addition, he reprised his role of same in the "MISS SAIGON-DENMARK" Productions 61 more times in Feb.- May, 2022, but, not in the English language version.   In barely three months and with a private tutor, Gerald Santos learned all the Thuy songs and sang them in Danish language.  The Danish audience was amazed and in complete awe of his performance in their native language.  Local Denmark news magazines and newspapers had articles written about Gerald Santos and his amazing performances in Danish language.  Overall, he performed 614 times as Thuy in "MISS SAIGON" Productions.

"MISS SAIGON-PHILIPPINES" is slated to start showing at "THE THEATRE AT SOLAIRE" this March, 2024.  WE, Filipinos, whom very few have been lucky enough to watch his amazing and phenomenal performances abroad, desire just as much to watch him showcase his magnificent skills and superb acting in the Philippines' arena.

It will be a big morale booster for the Philippines' fans of Gerald Santos and the community to witness how a Philippines'-born and raised singing actor, blend in unison with other actors from all over the world.  Then, persuade foreign audiences to write outstanding reviews in his behalf after watching his all too well performances.

WE think there is no other way to confirm what the foreign audiences of "MISS SAIGON INT'L" have continuously remarked regarding his acting prowess, other than watch him ourselves perform live in action front and center, with a mainly Filipino audience!

Thus, it has been approximately 23 years when MISS SAIGON-PHILIPPINES was graced by the original Kim, Lea Salonga.  It will be hard to swallow when the "MISS SAIGON' musical play is shown without our homegrown talent, Gerald Santos, in the main cast.  By the way, Gerald Santos was barely ten years old then.  It is a long time coming!

In lieu of the above foregoing statements, WE, the members of the "INT'L TEAM GERALD SANTOS" (ITGS) based in the Philippines, would   like to request from the owners and producers, et al of 'MISS SAIGON-PHILIPPINES, that Gerald Santos be considered to reprise his role as Thuy, when the 'MISS SAIGON" Productions come to the Philippines with its Australian cast.   With over 600 stellar performances mostly in Europe  and in two different languages, it is only befitting for a stage singing actor with this high caliber, be seen by his own countrymen in his own turf!

Mr. Cameron Mackintosh, et al, your kind attention extended to our plea and request to have Gerald Santos reprise his role as Thuy, when your "MISS SAIGON-AUSTRALIA" Productions reach the Philippines' soil  is greatly and respectfully appreciated.

TO YOU AND YOURS, WE SAY:   "MABUHAY"!

                                                                                                                       Yours very truly,

THE INT'L TEAM GERALD SANTOS-PHILIPPINES                                     ITGS
