Initiate an Ethics Review of Mia Bloom

The Issue

Professor Nimmi Gowrinathan recently reviewed Mia Bloom's book Bombshell.

Instead of responding to criticism of wester feminists essentializing female extremists abroad, she called Professor Gowrinathan thevadiyal, a dehumanizing sexualized slur that means "whore" in Tamil. She insisted on a second meaning of the slur and issued a non-apology then continued her abusive messages on Linkedin, calling her "an embittered bitch," and "whore," threatening to delete citations to Prof. Gowrinathan's work.

This public incident led others to come forward and describe how Mia Bloom has traumatized them with virtual impunity. Some scholars have stated leaving their programs to escape her abuse. The stories being shared have illuminated a pattern of racialized/sexualized harassment and abuse.

Professional courtesies and the benefit of the doubt were extended to Mia Bloom following the most recent display of abuse on Twitter. Her rejection of that polite engagement, refusal to acknowledge the hurtful nature of her comments, and the long documented history of abuses of junior scholars have prompted this public pressure campaign to encourage those who oversee ethics reviews at GSU to investigate thoroughly Mia's behavior.

This petition is designed to initiate an ethics review of Mia Bloom's alleged behaviors based on increasing evidence by those who have been victimized, and those who have served as witnesses to the abusive treatment of scholars and minorities.

Sign the petition to initiate an ethics review and ensure Georgia State University has safeguards to protect junior scholars from further abuse.
