In recent years, the mental health crisis on college campuses has only grown. Surveys conducted on college campuses have shown:

  • Nearly one in three college students was so depressed in the previous year that they struggled to function.
  • Over half of respondents reported "worrying constantly". This disproportionately affected female and LGBTQ+ identifying students.
  • Sixty-five percent of students reported having "poor" or "fair" mental health in March 2021.

Meanwhile, mental health resources are greatly inaccessible to the majority of students.

  • On average, students placed on waitlists for mental health counseling at their university will wait over three weeks before receiving support.
  • Eighty-six percent of college students with a psychiatric disability will drop out before receiving their degree.
  • Between eighty and ninety percent of students who committed suicide while attending university did not receive any help from their school's counseling center.

Seats At The Table is a student-led, student-run nonprofit empowering students to write, file, and advocate for legislative efforts that will promote mental wellbeing including mandating that universities establish MOUs with local mental health resource centers so that schools who may have otherwise lacked the capability to provide counseling to students in crisis will gain the capability to do so, training students on how to use mental health resources to eradicate confusion surrounding counseling on college campuses, and collecting and publishing data on the mental health status at each university.
