Aleta's Call

Aleta's Call
The Issue
I want to see more effort from the government, law enforcement and lawmakers regarding the reports and investigation of Missing Persons. Current laws states that a certain time has to have gone by before filing a missing person report. My family had an incident to occur in which my father walked to the store and didn't return. When the law enforcement within the county was contacted, they only gave a case number and stated that we needed proof from a Doctor that he was mentally ill or with dementia diagnosis to be considered a Mattie's Call. After contacting our Sheriff Department, they took immediate action bringing a Bloodhound and Team to search. The law of having a diagnosis to include a medical or mental issue prior to searching for the missing person should be classified as abandonment or neglectful upon the parties who fail to take a quick initiative. At the time a person is considered and reported missing, should alarm law enforcement to take immediate action towards investigation. Every day that a person goes missing causes more distress upon their families, causing emotional shock and trauma to take place. At any given moment a person could become mentally or physically incapable of normal functioning which makes it even more concern, being that they could possibly be in danger. My father was a normal human being and would sometimes forget things, however this particular day he walked away from home and didn't return for 14 days due to memory loss. He walked 12- 13 hours from his home in Jonesboro, GA to to the busy city of downtown Atlanta, where he found shelter to live at and left on the 13th day as his memory was in and out, leaving him in a vulnerable state. These cases are taken too lightly and should be considered one of the top priorities when it involves a human and his or her well being. Families are then forced to take action in finding their loved ones without support from the police force. After his memory returned, my father was able to find his way back home. After he returned home, he was evaluated by the ER in which all tests were done, bloodwork completed, CT done showing past stroke history that could contirbute to his memory loss. He followed up with his Doctor on October 26, 2018, 3 days after his return and was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia with behavior disturbances.
